Alcohol Liver Disease | Figures Show 400% Rise In Alcoholic Liver Disease Cases

ALCOHOLIC liver disease has soared among the young as hospital admissions have increased by more than 400% in the North East, new figures have shown.

Research carried out by Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, has revealed that hospitals in the region recorded 189 admissions for 30 to 34-year-olds with the disease last year, compared with 37 in 2002.

In total there were 778 admissions for the same age group with alcohol liver disease between 2002 and 2010, costing the NHS an estimated £1.8m.

There were a further 482 admissions for under thirties, with some people admitted to hospital being under the age of 20. Liver specialists in the North East have warned that “we are in the middle of an epidemic” that needs to be halted in its tracks.
