Liver Disease | Q5: Benefit To Aid In The Fight Against Liver Disease

Jhon Haehn, football coach at University of Saint Mary, is organizing the 2nd Annual Leesa (Hite Haehn Benefit Bike Run, Show and Benefit Auction Aug. 6 at McGilley Field House on the University of Saint Mary Campus. Jhon’s wife Leesa died in June, 2010, of liver disease, a few weeks after giving birth to her daughter Brooke. Pictured above are Leesa and Brooke.

1. John can you tell us about Leesa and her fight against liver disease.

Leesa was born with a rare liver disease called Glycogen Storage Disease. This eventually led to Cirrhosis and her need for a transplant. After the transplant she was doing great and the doctors gave her the OK to get pregnant. During her pregnancy something happened with her medication and she started to reject the liver. By the time we got to KU Med under the care of Dr. Gilroy it was pretty bad. She fought to get the baby to 27 weeks which was her number-one concern. Due to the fight she was weakened and left open to the infections that killed her. But I know that if she were here she would say it was worth it because Brooke was her number-one concern from day one.

2. What made you decide to begin organizing the benefits?
Actually her friends approached me last year about this and asked me if they could do a bike run to raise money for a college fund for Brooke. This was held in Fort Scott, where Leesa had grown up. There were 150 to 200 people there and it raised around $6,000. This year me and her stepdad took it over and decided to donate the money to the National Liver Foundation. We wanted to help Leesa’s giving spirit live on, she was definitely a selfless person who cared for others and affected a lot of people in the process. So we felt like if we can help other people with liver disease by raising money that this would be the best way to honor such a great person.

3. What sorts of activities will the benefit include and what are the times of the events?
We will be holding the event on the University of Saint Mary Campus on Aug. 6. We will start out from McGilley and do a Thunder Run around the area. This starts at 2 p.m. and will cost $10 for each rider. At 3:30 p.m. we will be doing a bike show for any of the riders who want to participate and this will be
